Section 2: Fire Alarm System

  1. Fire alarm system smoke detectors are typically not installed in the guest rooms unless it is a room designated for the hearing impaired.
  2. There does not appear to be any strobes installed in the corridors and lobbies. They are required.
  3. The legend should be more specific as to the make and model number of the devices installed.
  4. Provide the type and size of wire, cable, and conduit (include conduit fill ratio); Specify wire types, sizes and number of conductors between all devices/components on all shop drawings floor plans.
  5. The plans only show the residential portion of the fire alarm system.Provide the fire alarm plans for the entire building.
  6. Provide an equipment list showing quantity, make, model, U.L. listing number for each device.
  7. Provide the sequence-of-operation matrix; Provide a Sequence of Operation Matrix using the format of NFPA 72, 2007 Edition Figure A.10.6.2.3(9).
  8. State on the plan the type of system (i.e., supervising station, protected premises)
  9. Provide the assignment of class designation to device circuits per 2007 NFPA 72 Chapter 6.
  10. If provided, print the pre-recorded voice message content and languages and all associated evacuation/relocation alert tones preceding and following the message. (For example: steady tone 1-3 sec, temporal-3 tone).
  11. Describe any special features such as detector cross zoning or alarm verification or positive alarm sequencing.
  12. Provide the name of alarm service company (including UL No.) which will be responsible initially for inspection, testing, and maintenance of the system after it is accepted.
  13. If so, state on plan that the system is to be monitored proprietarily by in house personnel 24 hours a day, every day.
  14. Only one manual fire alarm box is required in a fully sprinklered building. It is suggested that the fire alarm box be installed adjacent to FACP. This manual fire alarm box shall generate full building general alarm (total evacuation) where fire alarm system is installed. See next comment.
  15. Manual fire alarm boxes are not requiredthroughout the building when all of the followingconditions are met: 1) The building is equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system installed in accordancewith Sections 903.3.1.1 or 903.3.1.2; 2) The notification appliances will activate upon sprinkler waterflow; and 3) At least one manual fire alarm box is installed at an approved location.
  16. Provide battery calculations to support the size of the standby batteries for power and duration. Is this a 24volt system? The System Power Requirement sheet states that there are 2 12VDC sets in parallel which means it is a 12volt system. 2 12 VDC sets in series would be a 24 volt system which is more common.
  17. Provide point to point or all devices at the end of the circuit voltage drop calculations
