As a result, the athletic shoe storage arrangement is defined as a Class IV commodity in conformance with Section 5.6.3.4 of the 2010 edition of NFPA 13. Class IV commodities are permitted to be constructed partially or wholly of Group B plastics and up to 15% of Group A plastics.

Packaging Arrangement

The stored footwear is wrapped in paper and packaged inside individual cardboard boxes. The cardboard boxes are then stored on solid wood shelves, piled up to four high and six wide on a shelf. The storage height is a maximum of 10 feet.

Design Criteria

Based on the commodity classification and storage arrangement, the Shoe Company store is required to meet the provisions of NFPA 13, Chapter 13 – Miscellaneous Storage.

According to Table 13.2.1 for Class IV shelf storage, up to 10 feet in height, the automatic fire sprinkler system shall meet the demand requirements for Ordinary Hazard, Group 2 as specified in Figure 13.2.1. The combined inside and outside hose stream allowance is 250 gpm for 90 minutes.

Figure 13.2.1 requires 0.20 gpm per square foot over 1,500 square feet for OH2.
