The Chevron Refinery produces gasoline fuel, diesel, lubricating oil for engines, for millions of people throughout the bay area. It also provides approximately 60 percent of the jet fuel for all the bay area international airports.

The Chevron Refinery in Richmond was acquired in 1901, after William S. Rheem found the ideal site adjacent the bay where the water was deep enough so large marine vessels could access the site. Today, the majority of processed fuel is transported by marine vessels, although the docking location has been moved from Point Richmond to a much more sophisticated long wharf.
